Story & Journey
Dr. G. Bakthavathsalam is a legendary surgeon, humanitarian, and healthcare visionary who transformed Coimbatore into one of South India's premier medical destinations. Born in Coimbatore district, he completed his MBBS at Madras Medical College and pursued advanced surgical training in the United Kingdom and the United States, earning Fellowships from the Royal Colleges of Surgeons. Driven by a deep commitment to his homeland, he returned to Coimbatore with a mission to deliver world-class medical facilities to the people of Western Tamil Nadu.
In 1974, Dr. Bakthavathsalam established the K. Govindaswamy Naidu Medical Trust and founded KG Hospital in Coimbatore. Under his leadership, KG Hospital pioneered the region's first 24-hour free emergency accident and trauma care unit, advanced coronary care centers, blood banks, and comprehensive dialysis facilities. Over a career spanning more than four decades, he personally performed over 50,000 complex surgical procedures, treating millions of patients regardless of their financial background.
Deeply devoted to medical education and rural health welfare, he founded the KG Post Graduate Medical Institute, training thousands of doctors, surgeons, nurses, and paramedical specialists. He organized hundreds of free medical, cardiac, and eye camps across rural Coimbatore, Tiruppur, and the Nilgiris, bringing advanced surgical care directly to underprivileged rural communities.
In recognition of his landmark service to society, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the President of India in 2005 and received the prestigious Dr. B. C. Roy National Award. Affectionately known as the 'Healing Hands of Coimbatore', Dr. Bakthavathsalam remains an inspiring icon of selfless service, visionary leadership, and medical excellence.
